The Happy LIFE of Romane

Romane has always had a pencil in her hand and it is in June 2019 that her future career as an artist is made official when she obtains her Bachelors Degree in Illustration at ESA Saint Luc de Liège. Romane has always been attracted by the landscapes, cities and colours of the south.

She loves summer, which is her favourite season, and loves to approach her colours in her illustrations. Romane wishes to convey joy, colour and smiles in her drawings.

The Happy STYLE of Romane

Romane loves mediums who don’t need to dry out. Since her studies, she likes to go straight to the point of her illustrations without having to wait.

She mainly uses coloured pencils and greasy chalks, for their texture, which she finds very graphic. Romane also uses digital drawing, with pencil brush effects, greasy chalks and also velvet effect, to give roundness to her characters.

Why do we LOVE Romane

Romane makes us laugh with its characters full of completely disproportionate bonhomie. We like the gap assumed with reality.

As much as some artists like Modigliani or Giacometti thin their models, Romane has taken the opposite side, like our great friend Botero!!!!. Probably a way to show that we are all “great men”?

The Happy Funky PORTRAIT of Romane

♥ Do you remember your first aesthetic shock?
I think my first aesthetic shock was the film Kirikou. I saw it as a child, and I was always marked by the atmosphere and the graphic universe of this film, as well as its music. Today when I see it again, I love it even more. I love the grain of the textures, the proportions of the characters, the shapes of the plants, the colours. I see this film not as a “cartoon” but as a beautiful illustrated album.

♥ The artist you would like to meet? What would you say to him?
I would like to meet Henri Matisse. If I could see him and meet him, I would like to go with him to his studio and make paper cuts. Tell him that his compositions are all as cheerful and lively as his colours.

What is your favourite colour? What does it inspire?
Cadmium yellow. This colour warms and comforts me, it gives cheerfulness to my illustrations.

♥ Which museum gives you the greatest emotion? Why?
The Capital Museum in Beijing. I’ve only been there once. It’s a contemporary museum, huge with big windows. The interior is open on several floors. I loved walking around there, I felt out of time. It was a special feeling.

♥ Which work of art would you buy without hesitation if you had an unlimited budget?
“Yellow Red Blue” by Kandinsky. I’ve always been very affected by colours, and by Kandinsky’s work in general. But I find this painting alive, it speaks to me, it takes me through various emotions.

♥ In which city do you feel happiest? Why do you think so? Share your 3 favourite addresses.
Los Gigantes – Tenerife, looking at the cliffs is more than enough.

Shanghai – China, Pearl of the East, it’s a tower that looks like it came from the future. The view from above is incredible and at night it shines with a multitude of colours.

Paris – France, Place du Tertre. I always go to Paris as a tourist and I love this place.

♥ What book keeps you up all night?
“Chocolate pickles” by Philippe Labro.

♥ What are your biggest sources of inspiration?
The weather, when I say the weather, I mean the weather. I’m a sunny person, so when the weather is nice, I’m very inspired. Music inspires me, my emotions of the day inspire me. And the illustrations I see on social networks and in the albums in my library.

♥ What’s the funkiest thing you’ve done in your life?
Drawing crocodiles in swimming trunks on the window of Galerie L’illu, in 35°C weather, with my sunglasses and socks on my feet.

♥ What is your definition of happiness?
Feeling like we belong, no matter where, no matter with whom.
